What is Coaching?
Coaching is NOT counseling, consulting, advising, mentoring or teaching.
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires a person to maximize their personal and professional potential. The process of coaching often unlocks previously untapped sources of imagination, productivity and leadership.
This is explored through the process described next.
Coaching sessions are structured to give you time and space to come up with your own insights/awareness, design effective actions, and learn from each action, therefore creating positive change for yourself. This is done with the support of a coach’s skillful questioning.
You bring a topic to each coaching session that you would like coaching on – something in your life you want to explore. In partnership with your coach, you reflect deeply, consider different perspectives and make your own connections.
When you have an insight (suddenly see, think or feel differently than before), everything can change in an instant. Your mindset alters and a clear next step is possible and believable. A coach will support you in bringing those next steps to fruition.
In each session, you decide which action step(s) would serve you to take before the next session.
In each session, we talk about how those efforts did or didn’t play out. The point isn’t that you promise the coach to complete actions; the real benefit of accountability is it gives you an opportunity to articulate what you learned, no matter what transpired.
Whether the action was completed/not completed and was successful/not successful, the follow-up review produces valuable and constructive awareness, in a neutral, curious way without judgement or criticism. This is a stark contrast to traditional accountability.
The ongoing supportive coaching process is the key to creating personal change. You get more perceptive about what does & doesn’t work and design effective beliefs, thinking pattern and strategies to achieve your desired outcomes.
