Coaching is NOT therapy or counseling. A coach focuses on your values, goals and desires which ideally spur you to action. Coaching concentrates on the present and the future. In coaching, you are considered NCRW (naturally creative, resourceful & whole) —to have your own answers which the coach helps reveal using coaching skills. A psychotherapist focuses on improving your mental health and can diagnose and treat mental health conditions. Psychotherapists are trained to navigate vulnerable psyches with skill and caution. The purpose of coaching is frequently about performance improvement, learning or development in some area of life while therapy often dives into deep-seated emotional issues to work on personal healing or trauma recovery. The overlap is both coaching and therapy/counseling look at the past to shed light on present-day patterns, revealing connections which can aid in making conscious choices to accomplish present and future goals.

Some people prefer to work one on one, in privacy, with coach’s focus & attention entirely on the client. Traditional accountability focuses on if you did the actions you were “supposed” to (e.g. homework in school). In coaching, accountability is looked at with curiosity and with a mindset that there is always something to learn- whether you did or did not accomplish what you set out to. You’ll hear questions like “What enabled you to accomplish your actions?” or “What obstacles got in the way?” As you actively reflect on your actions/non-actions, you begin to be aware of what works and doesn’t work for you and increasingly move toward positive change. There’s “winning” and there’s “learning”; they are both incredibly beneficial! To experience the uniqueness of this, schedule a complimentary coaching session HERE.
Because coaching is a co-created partnership, YOU get to decide what action to take, if any, at each session. You may choose an action in thought, word or deed- it’s up to you.
